Subject: New video series to spark interest in vegetable production of the future

We are pleased to announce that a new series of 26 instructional videos on vegetable production is being launched through the University of California’s Agricultural and Natural Resources You Tube channel beginning this coming Monday, May 13th. We encourage you to sign up at the You Tube channel to begin receiving weekly reminders of new video “premieres” that will be released every Monday morning at 8 o’clock.

Professors from four California universities, UC Davis, Fresno State, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Chico State, at which vegetable production courses are offered, teamed up to prepare and produce the videos. The series covers a full range of related topics and while primarily focusing on California, also includes topics from beyond the State as well.

We encourage your help in getting the word out about this series.
If I can be of further help, please call me at (559) 303-9689.

Subject: Food Safety Regional Lead for Tulare, Fresno, Madera, and Merced counties

Good Morning Ya'll,

My name is Jacob Roberson and I am the Food Safety Regional Lead for Tulare, Fresno, Madera, and Merced counties for a non-profit organization called Community Alliance with Family Farmers (new to Fresno area). CAFF is well established all over California except for the Central Valley which is where I am based out of (Fresno to be exact). I wanted to use this post as a source to contact farmers who are struggling with food safety and cannot afford to hire an outside consultant to come to their farm, perform assessments, help with documentation, and get their farm ready for a 3rd party audit. I perform the same duties as an outside consultant but my service is no cost to the farmer. CAFF is a non-profit organization looking to better food safety standards and procedures practiced on small farms / farms at a disadvantage (financial hardships, language barriers, new farmers, etc.).

Subject: Small Grains Field Day THIS SATURDAY

Sorry for the late posting!

The California Grain Campaign is organizing a Small Grains Field Day this Saturday, Feb.11, at Open Field Farm in Petaluma.

Registrations close Wednesday, Feb. 9. Email campaign@californiagrains.com for registration information.

A small number of California farmers have revived heritage grains in recent years. They've grown in varied climes and tried different strains. Now it's time to gather together, to learn from farmers and researchers, and to share best practices to strengthen our farms, businesses, and food shed.
The Small Grain Field Day is part of a series of workshops that will address technical aspects of grain farming specific to the California context.
AGENDA
The field day will cover four areas: seed selection, field cultivation, planting and monitoring -- including related equipment.
10 AM - Introductions and Open Field Farm tour
10:30 AM - Seed

Subject: On farm slaughter

Folks,

For any of you so inclined to help support some new changes to the Marin
County Zoning Code which would allow for on farm slaughter, mobile
slaughter facilities and brick and mortar facilities, there will be a
hearing before the Marin County Planning Commission on Monday November 28,
at 1:00pm. See below for more info from an email sent by the Marin County
Ag Ombudsman, Vince Trotter <marinagombudsman@gmail.com> 415.524.7394.

If you cannot attend, or even if you do plan to attend, please consider
writing a letter to the Marin County Planning Commission in support so as
many favorable voices as possible can be heard. (planningcommission@
http://marincounty.org). Unfortunately we anticipate a fair bit of resistance from
NIMBY's and folks opposed to anyone eating meat.

Thanks you very much,
Mark and Myriam Pasternak

Karie,

Bud's Custom Meats out of Penngrove/Cotati/Rohnert Park has a mobile onsite kill unit. It was awesome.

Gabe would come out to the farm and do the kill right there; no stress on the livestock (beef, pigs, sheep, goats, I think). He was very, very humane and efficient. Always cleaned up well, when he was done.

They do a good job with their custom processing. We were quite happy with them. Amy

Subject: Garbanzos

Looking for a clever, labor-saving trick to get garbanzos (chick peas, ceci...) out of the pod easily. Does anybody have a brilliant shortcut? I am spoiled, because I grow Jackson Wonder beans that spring from the pod. But i really like eating garbanzos green or dry, and they have done wonders interplanted with my cucumbers. So, I am hoping for a way to not hate this part of the process...

Thanks! Looks like i can either put the whole dry plants between tarps or in a pillow case and stomp all over them until the crunching isn't loud any more. Who knew!?!
