Headline: Ranch Garden Internship

Walker Creek Ranch is located outside of Petaluma in West Marin County on 1700 acres of beautiful ranch land and is owned and operated by the Marin County Office of Education. The ranch offers four and five day residential environmental education programs tailored toward 5th and 6th grade students. The outdoor school is dedicated to providing quality educational experiences for students and teachers that inspire appreciation and stewardship of the natural world.

Position: The garden intern will be involved in all aspects of the ½ acre garden including composting, bed preparation, seeding, transplanting, irrigation, weeding, and harvesting. The intern will also be responsible for assisting garden and trail activities and lessons for groups of up to twenty-two students, from a variety of cultural, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Intern receives paid training and continuing mentorship throughout the position.

Responsibilities: Intern will assist with garden care and education under the initial guidance of the garden naturalist. The intern will also perform daily animal care and ranch chores. During the first months the intern will work concurrently with the garden naturalist. During the summer months the intern will work independently to maintain the garden and to harvest produce for the kitchen at Walker Creek Ranch. The intern will assist in creating a safe learning environment for students and model environmentally responsible behavior. During the school year the Intern will periodically be responsible for leading groups in activities and lessons on the trail. Applicants should be physically able to work long hours and participate in strenuous activity. Position requires a positive attitude, flexibility and the ability to work as part of a team. Some weekend work may be required.

Qualifications: Strong interest in learning small-scale organic farming techniques. Completion of college level course work in natural sciences or sustainable agriculture is desirable. Some garden /farm experience. Experience working with children. The ideal candidate would have strong interpersonal skills, be enthusiastic and ready to learn, have a desire to become a garden educator.
