Subject: Make sure your farm or ranch is counted! - USDA Ag Census through June...

"NASS conducts a census of all agricultural operations every 5 years. We need to know about all types of agricultural operations of all sizes. Producers who are new to farming or did not receive a Census of Agriculture in 2012 still have time to receive the 2017 Census of Agriculture report form here, or by visiting http://www.agcensus.usda.gov and clicking ‘Make Sure You Are Counted’ through June. NASS defines a farm as any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year (2017)."

Subject: Overview & Resources from the Inaugural CA Farmer Educator & Support Services Summit

In September, UC SAREP & FarmsReach hosted the first CA Farmer Educator Summit in Sacramento. The resulting Top 15 Priority Areas, Directory of Organizations (incl. programs & regions served), Ecosystem Map (where orgs are based/served), and Ecosystem Chart (services offered in each program area) are all covered in today’s blog. It also includes details about the new list-serve for CA farm-focused organizations, collaborative fundraising strategies, and other priorities identified during the meeting.

The Summit built on momentum from the Farm Education Network (FEN) started on the Central Coast and on results from the January 2015 strategy session hosted by FarmsReach and Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture (MESA) in Pacific Grove, CA.

If your CA farmer organization hasn’t already done so, please fill out the Farm Education Network survey. UC SAREP and FarmsReach will periodically

Subject: Legislation against animal and environmental rights.

Hey all,

I feel this is really important for the farming community to be part of as it will def affect factory farming or more accurately those who try to bring attention to or speak out against cruel animals practices. Lots of good information on there. Thanx!

The Farmers Guild is working in partnership with the Grange to build a scholarship fund to to sustain sustainable agriculture by offering financial assistance to farmers and ranchers for continued education in the fields of land stewardship, animal husbandry, marketing, soil science, business planning, water conservation and other skills that promote their success as food producers.

We're building a list of educational programs, conferences, and other continuing education opportunities that support this goal, and we're looking for your suggestions.

What would you like to do if you had some extra support? Please share what programs that you think should be included in the list in the comments section!

Food Security In the Wake of Rancho: Something to Gain from the Shut-Down of the North Bay's Only USDA Slaughterhouse?

The recent recall, closure and sale of the North Bay’s only USDA-inspected slaughterhouse made headlines nationally, while our own food community—in a region that prides itself on pure, humane and locally produced ingredients—woke-up to how even the best-intentioned farmers and ranchers are entwined within a larger, more complex and often fragile system.

After the USDA issued and then expanded a second recall on all meats processed at Rancho Feeding Corp., the decades-old slaughterhouse voluntarily shut its doors as investigations ensued. Much of Rancho’s business relied upon the slaughter of retired dairy cows from all over the state, leaving specific time slots open to smaller-scale local producers of beef and pork, many of whom make up the myriad of our region’s
