Grazing School

UCCE Sonoma in collaboration with SRJC Shone Farm is hosting a two-day, hands-on grazing school provides participants with practical, field-based experience in applying the principles of managed grazing on rangeland. Participants will learn to estimate carrying capacity and graze periods, develop grazing plans and monitoring systems, and discover the benefits of prescribed grazing as a vegetation management tool. Taught by UCCE Extension specialists & others.

DAY 1 – FRIDAY, May 17 (8:30 am - 7pm)

  • Setting Achievable Grazing Goals
  • Basic Principles of Managed Grazing
  • Animal Nutrition, Body Condition Scoring
  • Selecting the right grazer
  • Animal Husbandry Basics
  • Grazing 101
  • Electric Fencing
  • Drought & Flood Management

DAY 2 – SATURDAY, May 18 (8: 00 am - 5 pm)

  • Graze Planning
  • Infrastructure
  • Pasture & Range Ecology
  • Livestock Protection Tools
  • Health Issues-Parasite Control
  • Livestock Economics, Leasing
  • Carbon Plan
  • Monitoring, meeting grazing goals


Cost: $200 (includes breakfast, lunch, and optional dinner with grazing discussion on Day 1; breakfast and lunch on Day 2). Also includes all course materials.
