FlipJack Ranch is gearing up for the next growing season. We raise organic turkeys, free range turkeys and rabbits for meat or pets. Our organic garden, small orchard and vineyard provide us and our BNB with beautiful flowers and food. The intern will learn organic methods, animal care, and a direction towards sustainable living.

Housing is provided in our tent cabin with electricity and heat, and a selection of foods is provided for you to cook at the main house where there is a kitchen, full bathroom and laundry for your use. FlipJack Ranch is looking for two summer interns! If you are interested in learning organic gardening and small livestock production, this might be for you. You will be working under the direction of the farm manager learning and performing farm duties. We provide housing in a tent cabin, access to full bathroom, access to a kitchen with most foods provided and a monthly stipend. This is a position for serious farmers only. Couples are encouraged to apply. The position is from April to October.

You must be able to work at least 6 hours per day, 2 days off. Farm work includes heavy lifting, repetitive tasks, occasional unplanned work or events. • Daily observation, feeding, watering & caring of chickens, turkeys, ducks and pigs on pasture
• Daily & weekly moving of poultry and pigs (electric fence is your friend)
• Maintenance of automated watering, electric fences, chargers, feeders
• Weekly pick up of locally sourced feed
• Regular cleaning of brooders and coops
• Daily gopher trapping and seasonal orchard care
• Livestock processing (bagging, labeling, weighing) both on and off-farm
• Sales/marketing including working Farmers Markets and assisting with on-farm sales
• Assist with farm tours, workshops and other public events

Qualifications & Skills:

• Ability to work long days in different types of weather
• Positive and Open attitude
• Provide own transportation and valid drivers license
• Ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis and repeatedly
• Ability to communicate clearly and listen to instruction
• Ability to be self-reliant and comfortable in a rural and quiet setting with little to no cell reception and unreliable wifi
• Ability to trouble shoot and problem solve independently
• Ability to work weekends
• Work well as a team member and independently
• Ability to know when to ask for help to ensure personal and livestock safety

Additional Desired (but not required) Qualifications

• Proficient in Excel, Word and social media
• Administrative tasks such as record keeping, marketing, etc.
• Comfortable in being around animals
• Experience or strong interest in tractor driving/maintenance
• Experienced and comfortable in driving a truck with trailer
• Experienced and comfortable with power tools and light carpentry

Compensation:

Private housing on the farm complete with outdoor shower, kitchen, and phone.

Meat and vegetables

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently working as a wwoofer volunteer at a ranch/farm/bed and breakfast/farm to table in Bonny Doon CA. This situation will be complete on October 5 so I'm looking for a new volunteer farm situation., preferably in Santa Cruz County. I have been working as a farm assistant since August 1 (the first month in San Diego County) and it has been wonderful. I can work until October 26 and would consider longer term as well if it is a great match.

My experience includes planting, harvesting, weeding, watering, feeding and caring for sheep, rabbits, goats, turkeys, chickens and ducks. I am good at marketing and sales (have retail produce experience as well as other marketing and sales experience) and preparing food for sale. I am newly trained in canning, yogurt and cheese making. Many years experience cooking, gardening, housekeeping, dog and cat care.

We have all devoted ourselves to learning and working on farms and through this cancellation in the program see an opportunity to get a more diverse work experience on other farms. We are not looking for all 10 of us to be in the same place, just opportunities overall for us to keep learning in great farming communities around California. Folks are available in increments of a few weeks to a few months, starting at the beginning of November. We have all been trained by Bob Cannard, head farmer here,
